Australia + New Zealand · July 2026
Allston + Donnie
All Flights BookedKeep in Mind
Top-of-mind actions for the rest of the trip — all three flagged 🚨 items below are time-critical.
Rest of Today · Sun Jul 12
- NIGHT IN — takeaway or delivery to the Airbnb. Apps that cover Rotorua: Uber Eats (largest) · DoorDash · Delivereasy (NZ-owned). Menulog exited NZ in 2024. Order by ~8 PM — most kitchens close 9 PM.
- Top pick: Terrace Kitchen TAKEAWAY — 07 460 1229 (open to 9 PM, highest-rated open Sunday). Alt: El Mexicano Zapata (5–9 PM) · Thai Central (Delivereasy, to 9:35 PM).
- Grab DRY swimwear + towel before the spa — the Zorb togs are damp.
- Then pack (Donnie still to pack) & rest — 7:15 AM start tomorrow.
- Done: Zorb · lunch (Atticus Finch) · shopping · Government Gardens · Tim Tams bought · Allston packed (Donnie still to pack) · United check-in.
- Cancelled: Redwoods Nightlights · Polynesian Spa · dinner out. Rotorua Museum also closed (to ~2028).
- No CO detector — the Airbnb listing flagged no CO alarm and none was brought. Nothing to do tonight; if a gas heater runs, ventilate.
Tomorrow · Mon Jul 13 — Departure Day
- Urgent Check-in = ZONE B — confirmed on the live AKL board. Zone B is a standard ground-floor zone in the International terminal, NOT the Zone T pavilion → check in + drop both bags in ONE stop at Zone B (straight from the Transport Hub). ⚠️ The bag-drop cutoff is the real deadline and is not published per-flight (~60–90 min prior → ~12:10–12:50 PM) — confirm in the United app or ☎ 0800 747 400.
- Urgent DEPART ROTORUA 7:15 AM — not 7:45. The Hertz return is at the DOMESTIC terminal precinct, so you must then transfer to International (950 m walk, or free shuttle every 15 min) — that's 25–40 min the old plan didn't account for.
- Breakfast: Capers Cafe, opens 7 AM (zero detour). Tirau's The Baker is CLOSED Mondays — don't bank on Tirau.
- Fuel up before the Hertz return — Z Energy, cnr Tom Pearce Dr & George Bolt Memorial Dr (24/7; the only station inside the airport). ⚠️ It's a BACKTRACK, not a drive-by — you'll pass the Hertz turn-off, loop the ring road, fuel, then come back 1.4 km (~8 min round-trip). Don't hunt for it on the approach.
- Bag drop is STILL required even though you're checked in online (~60 min cutoff — confirm in the United app).
- Lounge → Strata (airside, Level 2, after security). 🔒 You CANNOT pre-book (needs ≥24 h; earliest Mon slot was 6 PM — after your flight) → walk-in only. 📊 But midday is a lull — the 11 AM–2 PM bank is nearly all trans-Tasman (they use the Qantas/Air NZ lounges); AKL's real peak is the evening long-haul bank. ~70–80% walk straight in, <10% turned away. ⚠️ No Centurion at AKL (Amex Plat adds nothing); CapOne + Chase are US-only; CLEAR does not work at AKL. 💺 A Polaris upgrade does NOT unlock the Air NZ lounge.
- Decide the Polaris upgrade before boarding.
- Urgent DECLARE ALL FOOD to US CBP at SFO — the 2 boxes of Tim Tams and the bag of “Three Tastes of Australia” jerky (Billabong — emu, kangaroo, crocodile). ✅ Good news: it will most likely CLEAR. APHIS explicitly allows commercially packaged, labelled, cooked, shelf-stable meat & poultry in unopened packages — and Australia regained HPAI-free status in June 2025, so the emu (poultry) is on the strongest footing of the three. Kangaroo & crocodile are less black-and-white but lean admissible (CITES tagging covers skins, not meat). 🔑 DECLARING IS A FREE OPTION: per APHIS, “as long as you declare… you will not face any penalties — even if an inspector determines that they cannot enter the country.” Worst case they take it: no fine, no Global Entry impact. NOT declaring risks $300–1,000 + documented Global Entry revocation. So: declare everything, and don't eat it in a panic — you'll probably keep it. 🎒 PUT THE FOOD IN YOUR CARRY-ON (sealed, original retail packaging, near the top) — not the checked bag. Both are legal since you're declaring, but at SFO you clear customs after baggage claim, so if an officer wants to see it, carry-on is a 5-second hand-over instead of unpacking a suitcase on the customs floor. The commercial label is also the evidence that it is “commercially packaged, cooked, shelf-stable” — the exact APHIS wording that makes it admissible. 🚫 Do not split it between bags.
- NZ departure eGates accept US ePassports (fast emigration).

Practical Info
| Melbourne · Sydney | AUD (Australian Dollar) |
| Auckland · Rotorua · Waitomo | NZD (New Zealand Dollar) |
Both countries are very cashless — Visa/Mastercard/Apple Pay accepted almost everywhere. Withdraw AUD at MEL airport on arrival, NZD at AKL airport on Jul 10 (better rates than currency counters).
| SFO ↔ MEL/SYD | +17–18h (AEST) |
| AKL/Rotorua | NZST UTC+12 (+2h from AEST) |
| July = Winter | Southern hemisphere — pack layers |
UA60 SFO→MEL crosses the dateline westward — you arrive Fri Jul 3 (skip Thu Jul 2 entirely). UA916 AKL→SFO gains a day eastbound — depart Mon Jul 13, arrive Mon Jul 13.
New Zealand drives on the LEFT side of the road — steering wheel is front-right. Pedals are the same order as US. July 10–13 NZ rental leg only.
- Roundabouts go clockwise — yield to traffic from your right
- Right turns cross oncoming traffic — the harder turn; use turn lanes
- Lane drift warning — most common rental incident on unfamiliar-side roads
- International Driver's Permit (IDP) — required in NZ with a US license
- Route: AKL → Hamilton → Waitomo → Matamata/Hobbiton → Rotorua → AKL · ~6–7h total driving over 3 days
Best: Nomad (AU + NZ) — Donnie's pick; noticeably stronger in-country connection than the Airalo Oceania regional plan.
On Airalo? A country-specific plan (e.g. Australia-only) has been outperforming the Oceania Regional plan on signal — prefer per-country eSIMs over the one-region plan.
Each person buys their own via the provider's iOS app; activate on arrival in each country.
- Melbourne: Uber + DiDi + Bolt. Free CBD trams (Zone 1). Myki card for suburbs. Car likely needed for Phillip Island (Jul 4).
- Sydney: Uber + Opal card for trains/ferries. Manly ferry from Circular Quay. No car needed in Sydney.
- New Zealand: Rental car from AKL airport Jul 10. Self-drive all NZ days — AKL → Hamilton (N1) → Waitomo → Matamata/Hobbiton → Rotorua (N2+N3) → AKL airport (Jul 13 AM).
- Visa / Mastercard / Apple Pay — universally accepted in both countries
- No-FTF cards — use cards with no foreign transaction fees for everything
- Amex — accepted at hotels and restaurants; less common at small retailers
- Cash — keep AUD 100–150 and NZD 80–100 for markets and cash-only spots
July = austral winter. Melbourne and Sydney are mild (8–17°C / 46–62°F). New Zealand (inland/Rotorua area) can be cold at night. Waitomo caves are cool inside year-round.
- Layers — fleece + light waterproof jacket essential
- Evening wear — SSO concert (Thu Jul 9) — smart casual
- Outdoor gear — walking shoes + warm layers for Hobbiton, coastal walks, Penguin Parade at sunset (Waitomo Glowworm boat tour stays dry)
- Zorb — swimsuit or quick-dry clothes underneath
